Maggie Muffler Product Spotlight

If you have had an aquarium with an overflow box, then you have inevitably wrestled with how to make the drain in your overflow box quiet. There are all kinds of methods for quieting overflow boxes. The Herbie method, BeanAnimal method, DIY Durso and Stockman standpipes, or the old school method of shoving a bunch of bio balls in the overflow box. There are die-hard fans of each of these methods, but one of our favorite products for silencing overflow boxes is a Maggie Muffler. Here are some reasons why we like the Maggie Muffler.

No DIY
I love do-it-yourself projects, but my experience is that the average person would rather spend a little bit more to avoid the hassle of creating a muffler by gluing together PVC pipes and acrylic rods.

Low Profile
A Maggie Muffler is much lower profile than a DIY stand pipe muffler. In many small overflow boxes, like hang-on overflow boxes, a full-sized Durso muffler will not fit but a Maggie Mini will fit just fine.

Easy Installation

The Herbie and Bean Animal drain methods can be really quiet, but they can also be very difficult for aquarists to understand and get used to. Close your primary drain too much and you get a loud rushing sound from the secondary drain. Close the primary drain too little and you get the periodic gushing from the primary drain. An overflow box with a Maggie Muffler on a single drain is easy to understand and excellent for people who are intimidated by dual drain setups.

Works With Multiple Overflow Methods
If you have one drain, then a Maggie Muffler alone works well, but even if you have a Herbie or BeanAnimal overflow then you can still use a Maggie Muffler on the secondary drain. Using the Maggie Muffler on the secondary drain will keep it quieter and provide much more leeway when adjusting the drain valve. With some overflows, it can be very difficult to tune them, and adding the muffler will make dialing in a quiet overflow much easier.

Multiple Available Sizes
Maggie Mufflers come in two sizes. There is the standard Maggie Muffler that fits 1.5" standpipes and the Maggie Mini that fits 1" standpipes. There are also adapters that allow the standard Maggie Muffler to fit 1.25" and 1" standpipes. With all of these combinations, there is a Maggie muffler that will fit in nearly all overflow boxes.
