Fiji Cube DIY Sump Baffle Kit - Product Spotlight

Building your own sump is one of the oldest DIY projects in the aquarium hobby. If you are the kind of person who cleans the inside of your car engine compartment, then a beautiful acrylic sump from Fiji Cube, IceCap, and Reef Octopus is a great option. You will beam with pride whenever you open the stand and see that beautiful sump.

If you are on a budget or really don't care what the inside of your stand looks like, then perhaps you will be satisfied with a less-than-beautiful sump. You can get excellent functionality out of a DIY sump. The first DIY sumps were people gluing pieces of plastic or glass into standard aquariums. This was very difficult to do because measuring and cutting the acrylic was hard. There was also no good way to add popular sump features such as filter socks, media racks, and adjustable baffles. The Fiji Cube DIY Sump Baffle Kit offers a simple way to make your own sump with all of these features.

What does the kit come with?
The Fiji Cube DIY Sump Baffle Kits come with precut baffles and acrylic parts to add a filter sock holder, skimmer chamber with water level adjustment, refugium chamber, return pump chamber, and media rack, to a glass aquarium. The baffle kits come in sizes for standard Aqueon 10-gallon, 20-gallon long, 29-gallon, and 40-gallon aquariums.

What else do you need?
In addition to the baffle kit you need silicone sealant, and a properly sized aquarium. We also recommend that you have some acrylic glue to connect the baffles together. You can use Aqueon Silicone Sealant to glue the baffles in place. This comes in small tubes or a large calk gun size. We recommend the small tubes as these are easier to use in tight spaces such as the inside of an aquarium. We have packages with the Fiji Cube Baffle Kits and the Aqueon Sealant sold together.

For the aquarium, it is impossible to beat the half-off sales that the major pet retailers run. These sales can get you a glass tank super cheap. For acrylic glue, we recommend Weldon #4.

How do you put it together?
You first want to assemble the filter sock holder. The pieces fit together with tongue and groove pieces. You then use the Weldon to glue the pieces together. Once the sock holder is assembled, you can put the baffles and sock holder inside the tank and glue them in place with the Aqueon Silicone. The silicone will adhere to the glass very well but it doesn’t stick to the acrylic well so you will want to be generous with the amount used and make sure to apply the silicone to both sides of the baffles to wedge them in place. You can pick the position of the baffles to make each sump chamber the exact size that you like. After all of the baffles are in place the silicone will take 24-48 hours to cure and then you are ready to run water through the sump.
