Sera X-Feeder Fish Feeder - Product Spotlight



There are many different auto feeders to pick from. One of our favorites is the Sera X-Feeder Fish Feeder. Sera is one of those old-school German brands that has been making fish food for a very long time. Sera has always made very high-quality fish food. They use quality ingredients such as real wood in their catfish chips, jellyfish meal as a protein source in their marine food, and insect meal as the protein source in their freshwater food. The X-feeder is their first feeder sold in the US market, and it has a few unique features that make it worth considering.

Auger Based Feeder
Most automatic feeders use a rotating drum to dispense the food. You can adjust the amount of food by moving a slider on the drum, enlarging or shrinking the hole where food is dispensed, or by programming the number of times the drum rotates. This works OK, but it always seems like far more food is dispensed when the drum is full to the brim than when the drum is running low. This means the feeding amounts are not as consistent as many would like. In addition, many types of food like freeze-dried foods or powdered coral foods don’t dispense well in this kind of feeder. The X-Feeder uses a corkscrew-like auger to dispense food. You adjust the feeding size by telling the feeder how long to rotate the auger. This makes the feeding amounts much more consistent and it allows for better feeding of freeze-dried foods and powdered coral foods.

Top Opening for Filling
Most feeders require you to remove the feeding container to fill it. This often makes a mess and can create difficulty in readjusting the opening slider back to the position you want it in. With the X-Feeder, there is no rotating drum. To fill the feeder, you simply poor food in through the top hole. You can leave the feeder completely in place without a need to remove and readjust the feeder. There is also an included funnel to make refilling easier.

Swappable Auger Screws
If you want to feed extra small food there is an optional fine-threaded auger screw. The fine screw makes feeding extra small food even easier. This makes the X-Feeder great for feeding small amounts to anthias or dispensing small amounts of dry coral food throughout the day.

Included Mount for Tanks with Lids
If you have a tank with a glass lid, then it can be very difficult to use an automatic feeder. A typical auto feeder will require a 2-3-inch hole to dispense food. If the hole in the lid is smaller than this, then food will tend to build up on the edges of where the food is dispensed, and this will make a mess over time. The X-Feeder has a special bracket that sits directly on an aquarium lid. The feeder only requires a hole about the size of a quarter. This makes the X-Feeder the best automatic feeder for tanks with glass lids.
