Fluval's FX Canister Filter Monthly Maintenance Instructions:
To prevent sudden failure or reduced performance, Fluval suggests the following maintenance be performed every month on their FX Series Canister Filters:

• Unplug the filter prior to cleaning
• Clean and lubricate the included Motor Seal Ring (with the included Inland Seas Super Lube Silicone Lube)
• Check and clean the impeller and intake Stem/Strainer
• Check and clean the ribbed hosing
• Rinse the Bio-Foam in tank water
  
• Rinse half of the BioMax in tank water
  
• Replace the included Carbon Foam (every month)
• If you're using the optional Ammonia, Phosphate & Nitrite Remover Pads, they should be replaced every month as well.
