Extra Strong Magnets
If you have used any of the popular cleaning magnets, you have probably found out that in most cases it is best to buy a magnet rated for thicker glass than your aquarium has because the stronger magnet has more force to clean more effectively. With the Algae Free magnets, the glass thickness recommendations are actually accurate. If you buy the manufacturer's recommended size, it will work well. While the Algae Free Magnets may seem more expensive than other options, if you consider that you would likely need to buy one size up in the other brands, then the pricing of the Algae Free is very reasonable. Algae Free makes four sizes of magnet cleaners for glass/acrylic from 3/16” to 1” thick.

Acrylic Cleaning Pads
The inside of the Algae Free Cleaning Magnet is a Velcro material that allows you to easily add acrylic cleaning pads. The pads are very easy to switch out, and we have not found a magnet cleaner with a better pad for cleaning acrylic. The replaceable pads do a much better job than pads glued onto most of the other magnet cleaners. For glass aquariums, you can use the Velcro inside directly on the glass, and it is much more aggressive than other pads and good for tough algae.

Wood Exterior
While we recommend removing your magnet cleaner after each use, we also know that most aquarists will leave their cleaning magnet in the tank at all times. If you are going to leave the magnet on your glass, then the wood exterior portion of the Algae Free Magnet is more attractive than competing Magnets. This is definitely a premium look.

Floating Interior
If you have used magnet cleaners for any length of time, you have likely moved the outside a bit too fast and lost the cleaning side of the magnet inside of the aquarium. All but the largest size of Algae Free Magnets have a buoyant inside piece that floats up to the water surface when detached from the outside. This makes it easy to retrieve.

Easy Blade Upgrade
A personal favorite glass cleaning option is the Easy Blade attachment for the Algae Free Magnet Cleaners. The Easy Blade attaches to the inside of your Algae Free Magnet Cleaner and gives you a bladed scraper that is an actual razor blade. The blade scrapes off even the toughest coralline algae better than anything we have tried. Because the Easy Blade is an actual razor blade, you need to remove and rinse the blade after each use, and you can’t use the blade on acrylic-only glass. The easy blade is an excellent time-saver when deep cleaning a glass tank.
